Sudden Pain in the Lower Back

This article addresses sudden lower back pain.  Sudden lower back pain is different that the dull aching back pain which is chronic back pain.  Acute pain can become chronic if it isn’t treated in a timely manner.

Muscle Sprain – Sudden stretching or tearing of a muscle can cause pain

Sciatica – Inflammation of the sciatic nerve (from the lower back to the legs) can cause a sudden shooting/burning pain

Herniated discs – Also known as slipped discs.  A significant cause of sudden pain in the lower back

Spondylolysis – A defect in the part of the vertebrae that is shaped like a wing.  This can be a congenital defect or can result from an injury, fracture, or trauma.

Women can also experience lower back pain during pregnancy.
