Memory Foam Mattress FAQs

Here at Healthy Foundations, we received a lot of questions about memory foam through our phone lines, live chat, and email.  Here are a couple of recent ones I’d like to share.

Q – I see that there are some mattresses that have just a little bit of memory foam in them. Are these mattresses considered to be true memory foam mattresses?

A – Many mattresses do use memory foam in small quantities. This does not mean the mattress is indeed a memory foam mattress. In order for a mattress to be considered a memory foam mattress and have actual memory foam qualities, the main component of the sleep surface of the mattress should be memory foam. At least three inches of memory foam should be used to create a true memory foam mattress.

Q – I have noticed that the big name mattresss companies Simmons and Sealy are now selling memory foam mattresses. Can I get a good memory foam mattress at a good price from these companies?

A – Simmons and Sealy are relatively new to the memory foam mattress arena. Just because a large company jumps into the game with a product that may look like what the long-time leading retailers are selling, it doesn’t necessarily mean you are getting a quality product. I have found that many times a retailer or manufacturer does not do well trying to branch outside of their area of expertise. This doesn’t only apply to mattresses, but in many industries where a company has spread themselves too thin or gone outside their specialty. When checking out memory foam mattresses from a mattress company that already has a big name, use the same cautions and standards you would use when checking out a no-name company.
