A Few Memory Foam Mattress Terms You Should Know

Shopping for a memory foam mattress can be tough sometimes.  There are a lot of unfamiliar terms that can sometimes seem confusing.  Here are a few terms that can help you during your memory foam mattress search:

Mattress Core – This is the basic core of the mattress.  In the case of a memory foam mattress, it is the core foam that the memory foam is layered on plus the cover or ticking.  The cover or ticking is the outside of the mattress.  On a memory foam mattress, it is a zippered cover rather than a sewn ticking.

Before buying a memory foam mattress or topper, check to see if the retailer is a member of, and monitored by, recognized third party organizations like the Better Business Bureau and www.Shopping.com. Having a third party organization gather data, opinions, and testimonials about a retailer allows you to see the retailer completely, without the rose-colored glasses and filtered testimonials you see on the websites and in the literature of many retailers.

Look for a 10-Year Warranty to Gauge Memory Foam Mattress Durability

A warranty of 10 years is one way that you can gauge the durability of a memory foam mattress and how much its manufacturer is willing to back up its product.

In judging a warranty, at least 5 years of that 10-year warranty should be non-prorated, meaning you will get 100% of the repair or replacement taken care of for the first 5 years of the warranty. A prorated warranty means that after a designated number of years, the manufacturer will pay a portion of the mattress replacement or repair. A 10-year warranty that has 5 years non-prorated and 5 years prorated means that for the first 5 years, you are covered 100%. For the second 5 years, you will pay a predetermined portion of the replacement or repair.
