In the article, Chronic Back Pain Relief – What Can Be Done?, Jon Ferraro offers his advice for relieving chronic back pain. The article was not published recently, but the advice is valid and still worth sharing. Mr. Ferraro points out that many people who have suffered with chronic back pain for years can’t imagine living without that pain, even if they do have some moments that are pain free.
We are often asked about whether our memory foam topper pads are helpful for people with specific types of pain issues. Here’s a question we got about fibromyalgia:
“I am trying to decide whether to purchase the 2″ or 3” memory foam mattress topper. I have fibromyalgia and will be placing the topper on my King Coil mattress and box springs (they are in great shape).
I frequently blog about memory foam mattresses, natural latex mattresses, and sleep. I personally have a very keen sense of smell, so Top 5 Serene Bedroom Scents jumped out at me as something that might be interesting. Scents are also very strong triggers of memory and can remind us of things or places in our past too.
Is it time for a new mattress? Tired of tossing and turning or falling into that crater in the middle of your mattress? Then perhaps it’s time to take a look at the comfort a memory foam mattress can offer.
Memory foam mattresses are very comfortable. Memory foam is temperature sensitive, which means it uses your body’s heat to mold to the contours of your body. This reduces pressure points and the need to flop around all night to get comfortable. When you do change positions, the memory foam goes back to its original shape and then gently molds to your new sleeping position. Yea! No more crater to fall in!
I found some great tips off of the website www.helpguide.org, involving some self-help cures for reducing mild snoring. If you do snore, one or two of these might just do the trick for you. Remember, however, that snoring can also have serious health implications, such as sleep apnea, and chronic snorers who are often middle age or who are overweight, might indicate a serious health problem. So, check with your physician if you have these issues to rule out any serious health problems.
According to a previous article on BusinessWeek.com by author Ed Edelson entitled Nerve Stimulation Device Doesn’t Ease Most Back Pain, if you are going to use a transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) device to ease your back pain, don’t bother.
This advice comes directly from the American Academy of Neurology. According to Dr. Richard M. Dubinsky, a professor of neurology at Kansas University Medical Center and chair of practice improvement for the academy, there are no controlled studies showing that TENS is effective against back pain of unknown origin that has persisted for three months or longer. Dr. Dubinsky is the lead author of an article about TENS in a recent online issue of Neurology.
I injured myself over 30 years ago in a snow skiing accident, and ever since I’ve had chronic back pain.
It has been so severe as to be disabling, although over the years I’ve learned a lot of different exercise and lifestyle techniques that have helped me get back into life.
But the first thing to really help me feel better and be able to participate more in life was memory foam.
Here’s a recent question we got on using a memory foam mattress topper pad on a sofa bed:
“I have a new sofa bed with a 5 inch mattress. But it still is uncomfortable. Will a mattress topper work in a sofa bed and will it close if I leave it on?”
This questions brings up a bigger issue – which is whether a memory foam mattress topper pad can help make a sofa bed more comfortable.
Time for a new mattress? Maybe you’re thinking about a memory foam mattress. You’ve heard they’re comfortable, but what’s all the hype? Why is a memory foam mattress so comfortable?
A memory foam mattress is temperature sensitive. This means that it uses your body’s temperature to mold to the curves and contours of your unique body. (And your sleeping partner’s unique body too!) This reduces pressure points and the need to thrash around to get comfortable. Once you do change positions, the memory foam “remembers” its shape and then gently molds and conforms to your new sleeping position. The memory foam readjusts for every single position change you make, but you’ll make a lot fewer position changes with memory foam’s comfortable support.
Perhaps you have a fairly new mattress (five years or less) that isn’t as comfortable as you’d like. Maybe it’s in good condition, but you just don’t like the way it feels. Are you destined to sleep uncomfortably or spend money replacing a relatively new bed? Not necessarily. Here’s why…
A memory foam mattress topper may be just what you need to make your current mattress more comfortable. Full Size Memory Foam Mattress Toppers points out some reasons why a memory foam topper pad may be right for you. Although a memory foam mattress topper can make a relatively new mattress more comfortable, it’s not a substitute for a new mattress if your current mattress is old and worn out. If you current mattress is more than five years old and/or has dips, sags, or lumps, a memory foam mattress pad is not going to help it. In the case of an old or worn out mattress, replacement of the mattress is the answer. In that case, skip the memory foam mattress topper and think about a new memory foam mattress.
