Is It Possible To Build Your Own Memory Foam Mattress?Back to main FAQ directory page Can I build my own memory foam mattress?I have, though, helped some people make up their own homemade memory foam mattress. However a word of warning first - while these homemade versions can be quite comfortable, I don't want to mislead you into believing that this mattress would duplicate the comfort of the more expensive mattress memory foam that are out on the market. But for people who I have helped make their own memory foam beds tell me that they think they are very happy with the feel and comfort that they were able to achieve. To make your homemade "memory foam" mattress, you will need to find a local store that carries very high quality foam (called high resiliency foam, or HR for short). It's important to get the highest density possible (2.5 - 3 pound foam) and with a relatively medium firmness (ILD of 26, or 31). Another option is to go with a latex mattress, which is even denser (4 pd density) and also more expensive. If you decide to try latex, make sure you try out the mattress to make sure it is comfortable. They adjust the softness/hardness of latex by putting holes into the mattress. The bigger the holes, the softer the latex will feel. So try out a few different hole configurations to try to find one that feels comfortable to you. Then once you have found and tried out the foam bed you like, you can place the Healthy Foundations pad over the top and create your own memory foam bed. |
