Comparison of Healthy Foundations Memory Foam Mattress and Toppers to Tempurpedic ®
From: David Rosenberg, proprietor, Healthy Foundations

This summer, we stopped selling memory foam mattresses due to the patent law suit filed by Tempur-Pedic. To my surprise, the suit was dismissed by Tempur-Pedic at the end of October.
What to do now? I decided to try to make lemonade out of these lemons. While it was a difficult decision to stop carrying a memory foam mattress in the face of the lawsuit, the upside is that now I can try something I've always wanted to try -- a real time contest, among the A list manufacturers we've identified over the years, to see which memory foam mattress really offers the most comfort. And the kicker is that I wanted the contest to be judged by you -- our customers -- rather than by having us try out samples (which is how we've always done it in the past)

Mattress Ok, but Too Firm? A Topper is a Less Expensive Option that Works Well
If your mattress is basically ok, but just overly firm, then that is when one of our toppers can really make it much more comfortable. How does this compare to a Tempurpedic ® alternative?
Well the initial difference that most people notice is that adding a Healthy Foundations toppers pad to your existing bed is a fraction of the cost of buying a new Tempurpedic ® mattress or Tempurpedic ® 3" overlay. Why is there such a price difference? Well, there is a bit of a reason for the price difference - the difference in density between our memory foam and Tempurpedic's ® Tempur foam. Tempurpedic's ® foam is a bit denser than our pads - 5.35 lb/cu foot density vs. our pad's 4 lb/cu ft density. This measurement of density is based on what a cube of each material would weigh were the cube was a foot in each dimension. (Note: ordinary foam pads often weigh from 1/2 to 1 pound per cubic foot, making these visco-elastic foams a truly different class of foam products.)
Since a higher density foam does utilize a bit more raw material, this accounts for a small part of the price difference between Tempurpedic ® and Healthy Foundations' topper pads. As for the rest of the price difference, the issue is whether you really get a better quality foam and sleep on Tempurpedic than on our mattress toppers? Is there such a difference in quality of these foams that the Tempurpedic ® is worth 4 times the price?
This is a very subjective question to answer, and I can't say whether any particular person would like the Tempurpedic ® foam that much more than the Healthy Foundations topper pad. I can say that we get less than a 3% return rate and lots of positive testimonials from our customers on our pads reducing pressure points and improving their sleep. For most people, our topper pad seems to be the sweet spot for these toppers - a high enough density so that you get the benefits of memory foam while still affordable, especially in comparison to a product like the Tempurpedic ® pad.
So what's the bottom line? I know people who love both types of this memory foam. They both seem to do the job in terms of reducing pressure, alleviating common back or joint pain, and allowing for a more comfortable, and deeper sleep. Since the price difference is so great, many of my customers who are simply looking for greater sleep comfort try the Healthy Foundations topper pad and find that does the trick. Other customers whose mattresses are worn out, who are bedridden (and so can benefit from a higher density memory foam), or who just enjoy the feel of the memory foam made by the Tempurpedic ® may instead choose to go with the much more expensive memory foam made by Tempurpedic ®.
